My wife Steph and I visited a Masai Village whilst we were in Amboseli National Park, now you might think this is a contrived, made for tourist village, but it’s a real fully functioning village. Sure they have geared it to receive tourist, but it’s the real deal with a Masai warrior that has just come back from being out hunting and just looks serious all the time and would rather by out hunting again then having his photo taken. In saying that, you are very welcome to take photos but naturally be respectful and ask when taking more intimate people shots.
The villagers do a welcome dance for you and are dressed in their usual colored clothes, and adorned with their beautiful jewelry, the men and women also do the traditional jumping that the Masai are so well known for. Then you get to wonder around the village and look inside their mud huts, you are going into real homes where they live. We were greeted into one mud hut where the mother had a new baby, possibly only a week old, the room only had a tiny square hole in the wall as a window. It was like going back in time and we were given the privilege to photograph the mum and baby, its one of the most beautiful portraits I’ve ever taken.
Steph showed the other Masai females photo’s she had taken of then and it was amazing how there was much laughter and discussion. Whilst this was happening I was able to stand back and get some shots of the Masai women, it was so beautiful to see them light up with joy, you realized just how much we are all alike, we just need to drop our social guardedness and get to know each other.
Masai jewelry is so unique and beautiful and a large put of their culture and at the end of your stay you can then browse their little market place for jewelry made by the villagers.
