This is Oldfields hut, it’s a fantastic slab hut, I love it. I spent 2 nights camping here, it drizzled with rained the whole time, but it was the best time. I was fortunate to spend time with one of the real highcountry men at Oldfields hut, his name was Granville Crawford and he told me stories of his time spent in the saddle pushing cattle through this whole area and staying at Oldfields hut.
I love it when these old men tell you stories of their past and they get that joyous faraway look in their eyes.
My uncle Albert Foster used to push cattle through this area as well, he died about 37 years ago. When I mentioned his name to Granville his face lite up and he said “we were mates!”, then he proceeded to mimic Uncle Albert voice, I was totally blown away.
That was a very special day for me.
